Johannes Lingelbach
(Frankfurt/Main 1622–1674 Amsterdam)
An elegant party in a park, probably of the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, with an artist drawing in the foreground, oil on canvas, 73.7 x 88.9 cm, framed
Provenance: Sale Christie’s, London, 18 July 1974, lot 33.
Executed with the collaboration of Jan Blom (Amsterdam c. 1622–1685). The German-born artist Johannes Lingelbach spent ten formative years in Rome from 1643, where he numbered among the most prominent exponents of the second generation of the Bamboccianti. Stylistically, he was a follower of Pieter van Laer, who gave the Bamboccianti their name, however in his commonly merry scenes he developed an autonomous and unmistakable language of his own. The present compostion with an exquisite ambience and rendering of the park of the celebrated Villa d’Este is a fine example of his oeuvre.
